Spectra Lifestyle is beyond proud to announce we won the 2021 HIA WA Kitchen and Bathroom Awards – Renovated Kitchen $45,001 to $60,000 category for our Tapping kitchen renovation project.
We need to thank our Tapping client who entrusted us with their kitchen renovation dream and choose us to bring this vision to life.
We also need to acknowledge our incredible team for who this would not be possible from the design, the manufacture, the install and administrative support … thank you.
Below we wanted to list a short overview of the project, our design statement and the specifications for the project are below.
Project Overview
The existing kitchen in this home was small, dark and impractical. The dishwasher was in the laundry, there was not enough storage and the clients were trying to run a business from a small desk in the corner of the kitchen. The brief for this project was to create a modern functional kitchen suitable for a busy family of five and incorporate an office space that blended seamlessly into the room.
The extended island bench became the hero piece of this kitchen by creating a hub for the family to gather around and spend time together without getting under each other’s feet. The design of a purposeful area, the perfect mix of materials and the introduction of more natural light into the room finished off the perfect space for a busy, young family.
Our Design Statement
The brief for this project was to create a modern kitchen that was suitable for a busy family of five as well incorporate an office space where the clients could run their small business.
The existing kitchen was dark and lacked life, so the clients added a new window to the space. This new window brought some additional light to this corner of the home and became the splash back for the new five burner cooktop. Having the oven down low was a safety hazard with three young children running around, so this was moved to an oven stack with a built in microwave above. With no dishwasher recess in the existing kitchen, the clients had been taking their dishes in to the laundry, which was impractical for this busy family. We added the dishwasher to the new island bench and included a large pull out bin to make cleaning much easier and quicker. In the original design the dishwasher was on the right hand side, however it would have hit the back of the power point in the benchtop, so the bin and the dishwasher locations were swapped.
The built in pantry was not large enough for the family and was taking up much needed space. This was removed and replaced with a 1200mm wide, full height pantry with internal drawers so the clients could easily see and access everything.
The clients run a small business from home and wanted to incorporate an office space in to the new kitchen. This space needed to be functional but also blend seamlessly in to the room so they could pack away and escape from work on the weekends. We included a tall cabinet that helped to balance out the large pantry in the kitchen, but could also hide the printer and provide much needed storage. The overheads above the desk add additional storage for this space, but also helps tie in with the overheads above the cooktop helping to blend the two spaces together.
The existing island bench was too small and narrow and the clients wanted something more suitable for a young, busy family. The extra-long bench provides much needed storage and bench space but also creates a hub where the family can come together without being in each other’s way. The decision to create the step down in the island meant that we did not have a join in the stone benchtop, as well as creating additional work space that could flow on from the office. It is also a space for the kids to do their homework or play while Mum and Dad are working or in the kitchen.
The feature timber detail to the underside of the breakfast bar highlights the unique shape of the island bench but also ties in the island with the rest of the kitchen. The decision for adding the tiles to the back of the island was to add some texture and dimension to the kitchen but also protect the back of the island from being marked from school shoes and work boots.
